Arid Flora | Our Goals

Arid Flora – Rare Succulents, Cactus & Unique Houseplants

Arid Flora specializes in rare and unique plants not commonly found in traditional garden nurseries or big box garden centers. Our collection features many species from the succulent and cactus families, prized for their beauty, adaptability, and low-maintenance care.

Most of our plants thrive as indoor houseplants, perfectly suited for homes and apartments with dry climates or warm indoor temperatures. They are naturally drought-tolerant plants, requiring far less watering than typical greenery—making them ideal for busy lifestyles or anyone seeking low-water plants.

In addition to our succulents and cacti, Arid Flora also offers other specialty varieties of indoor and outdoor plants that adapt to different climate zones and growing conditions. Whether you’re looking for a striking desert plant, a resilient container plant, or a distinctive rare houseplant to brighten your living space, Arid Flora has something unique waiting for you.

Mission Statement

To be a provider of rare and unique succulents, cacti, and houseplants, that inspire beginners and collectors alike with exceptional species not found in ordinary nurseries.

Vision

To make rare and unique plants accessible to all. Helping people with plant care to create a thriving environment for their plants to grow and thrive, with as little stress and as 'low maintenance' as possible.

Arid Flora | John McDonald Owner

John McDonald’s love for plants began in childhood, sparked by the memory of his mother’s cactus blooming in the kitchen window and growing radish seeds in his backyard. That early curiosity grew into a lifelong passion.

From college through his career as an optometrist, John always kept plants close—his loyal philodendron even moved with him through college, graduate school, marriage and parenthood. He volunteered collecting and growing native plants for the Cleveland National Park Service in Southern California and now serves on the board of the Chico Bonsai Society. He's also a member of both the Sacramento and San Francisco Cactus and Succulent Societies.

John specializes in growing cactus and succulents from seed and cuttings. He values their low-maintenance nature, unique beauty, and resilience. As a semi-retired optometrist, he now shares his collection with others—helping each plant find a home where it will be loved and appreciated.
