John McDonald’s love for plants began in childhood, sparked by the memory of his mother’s cactus blooming in the kitchen window and growing radish seeds in his backyard. That early curiosity grew into a lifelong passion.
From college through his career as an optometrist, John always kept plants close—his loyal philodendron even moved with him through college, graduate school, marriage and parenthood. He volunteered collecting and growing native plants for the Cleveland National Park Service in Southern California and now serves on the board of the Chico Bonsai Society. He's also a member of both the Sacramento and San Francisco Cactus and Succulent Societies.
John specializes in growing cactus and succulents from seed and cuttings. He values their low-maintenance nature, unique beauty, and resilience. As a semi-retired optometrist, he now shares his collection with others—helping each plant find a home where it will be loved and appreciated.
